Name: Grim Reaper
Lifespan: Immortal (Can only die from a depletion of spiritual energy)
********
Appearance: Grim Reapers are, primarily, the undead souls of Humans, though some other humanoid races have been known to gain the powers of a reaper. This, however, is on very rare occasions.
Traits: Grim Reapers have some physical traits that differentiate them from the Living. One of the most prominent traits is that their eyes, if colored, glow with an intense spiritual light. Few reapers have the ability to suppress this glow, which makes all who cannot easy to distinguish from the living. Another difference is that their skin tones are generally a shade grayer than when they were alive. On some occasions their skin may become brighter, or completely pale, but taking on a shade of gray to their natural skin tone is the general.
Abilities: Grim Reapers have an arsenal of abilities that only get stronger as the reaper ages and collects souls of the dead. The most basic of these abilities gives them the power to summon a unique scythe that matches their style and personality. Another ability they have gives them access to dimensional rifts that they can use to travel between the physical world and the spiritual world. However, one major ability Grim Reapers have gives them the power to construct a physical body out of spiritual energy and use it to simulate a second life. This ability uses a large quantity of energy, but many reapers find it worth wile.
Source of Magic: A Grim Reaper's magical ability stems from their spiritual power. If a Reaper has enough spiritual energy they can simulate magic by literally snatching the energy from the air and controlling it for themselves. It is extremely difficult for Reapers, while in physical bodies, to use magic. Almost impossible actually, since most, if not all, of their energy goes into sustaining a physical form.
********
Religion: Grim Reapers serve no mortal or immortal God. Instead, they worship a spirit known as the Shinigami, or God/Spirit of Death. The Shinigami is the one who dictates law in the Spirit Realm and has the power to control the very souls of Grim Reapers. They are bound to this spirit, and it is believed that their entire source of life energy comes from the Shinigami itself. In return, they harvest souls for their spiritual energy and, by means of a symbiotic bond with their Spirit Leader, replenish it as well. For if the Shinigami were to no longer exist, so too would all Grim Reapers fade away.
History: Grim Reapers were established, first by the Moon God of Balance, Enlil, to replace the guards of the Spirit Realm who lost their powers after the God Wars. It was Enlil, by means of shedding his own omnipotent power, created the first Shinigami. That Shinigami, in turn, dispersed its own energy in order to create other beings, now known as Grim Reapers. It is said that the Shinigami once had a physical form, but after dividing itself, it has become nothing more than an invisible force of Spiritual Energy that gives life to the Grim Reapers.
Periodically, however, when Grim Reapers have harvested enough spiritual energy, the Shinigami is once again able to take physical form. In current history, reports of actual Shinigami have only been recorded twice. Whether or not a Shinigami was born into this world more or less is unknown. The majority of the living do not even believe in Shinigami or Grim Reapers, but those that do fear them just as much as they respect them.
Other Notes: The last reported Shinigami to arise did so during the 6th age, where it did battle with the legendary Vulcan Clan. Rumors have circulated that the two powers wiped each other out, but there are also rumors that the Vulcan Clan captured the Shinigami in a massive Soul Eater. Neither of these rumors have been proven to be true, and none of the events in question have ever effected the Grim Reapers. Only time will soon reveal the truth.
